How We Research
Every guide on GardenNJ starts with one question: will this product work for the plant and the space? For indoor gardening, that means the plants you want to grow, the room you have, and the care you can provide.
Here is how we answer it.
1. We start with the plant and the space
A large grow light may not fit above a small shelf. A hydroponic system that needs frequent attention may not suit someone looking for a low-maintenance herb garden.
We consider growing area, plant size, available light, water access, and room for setup and maintenance. For pots, stands, tents, and climate supplies, we look at dimensions and how they fit the intended location.
2. We compare specs and features
We check the details makers list, such as a grow light's coverage, mounting options and controls, or a hydroponic system's capacity, pump and included parts. For planters and care supplies, we consider size, materials, drainage, compatibility and what comes in the box.
Makers describe their products in their own words, so we name the brand for each claim. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.
3. We look at buyer feedback
We read what buyers report after using a product. We look for patterns, like lights that are difficult to position, pumps that stop working, planters that leak, or supplies that are hard to maintain.
One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.
4. We score each product
Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A light suited to seed starting may score lower in a guide for growing mature fruiting plants.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
5. We keep pages up to date
Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers sell close models under similar names, so we check each model name and what comes in the box, and we only link new units.
We skip unknown brands with no track record and any product with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.
What our picks are not
Our picks are research, not hands-on tests. We don't claim to have used every product we cover.
Growing conditions vary by plant, home and setup. Use product instructions and check the needs of your plants when choosing and using indoor gardening supplies.
